Design Challenges to the New Energy Code in WA

Recent energy code updates often require 1” rigid foam insulation applied to the exterior sheathing. When combined with the Joto-Vent System®, this creates tricky transitions between the wall and the vents.

A Smarter Way to Finish with the Joto-Vent System®

Traditionally the lower edge of the exterior wall is finished with the Z-Covering (EAC-0-10). However, as shown in the detail, there is also another design idea:

A. Extend the wall sheathing downward to cover the Joto-Vent.

B. Attach the Insect Prevention Strip (JIP-2-10) directly onto the sill plate.

C. Install the foam insulation on top.

This creates a smooth, simplified transition that can avoid extra flashing while maintaining protection against insects and moisture.
